Mid-South Division Showdown in Sun City

Thursday, June 21, 2007 (Laredo, TX):

A mere point separates the top two teams in the Mid-South Division this week and this coming Saturday, June 23rd, the first place Laredo Heat Soccer Club (5 – 1 – 3, 9 GP / 18 Points) will be traveling to the Sun City to take on the second place El Paso Patriots (5 – 3 – 2, 10 GP / 17 Points) at Patriot Stadium. Kick-off is set for 8:00 PM MST. Both teams are coming off a weekend that neither team played. The Patriots by choice and the Heat had their game versus Austin postponed on Friday, June 15th due to weather concerns.

The Patriots will also be entering Saturday’s contest with a win in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 12th versus the USL-1’s Miami FC. The Patriots won that game in penalty kicks in El Paso.

“This is fun. The team has had a great week of practice and due to not having had a game since Saturday, June 9th at home versus New Orleans, they are ready to get back on the pitch to play and what better way than to go to visit our friends in El Paso”, said a smiling Heat General Manager J.J. Vela. Vela added, “Coach Collazo, his staff and players know how important this game is and we all know that the Patriot organization will promote this Saturday’s game with all they got. Including their dollar beer night to get as many fans into the stands I bet”. Vela concluded, “While going to El Paso and getting a tie would be beneficial to us, our mentality at practice this week and going into the game is to go to Patriot Stadium and get three points. A win in El Paso will go a long way in getting us where we want to take this season and more importantly, will get us closer to our initial goal of making the playoffs as the top team from the Mid-South Division”.

The Heat will be without the services of 16 year old and LBJ High School standout Felix Garcia for the game this weekend. Garcia was issued a red card versus New Orleans at the end of the game and the league handed him a one game suspension that he was not able to serve last week due to the postponed game in Austin.
