Laredo Heat plans soccer tryouts next week

The Laredo Heat is gearing up for their second year in Premier Development League soccer competition.

The Southern Conference runner up kicks off the PDL season on April 29 at home against the Austin Lighting, but first they are looking to reinforce their squad. Unlike the past years, the Laredo Heat is now asking for potential players to submit a resume via e-mail or fax prior to Friday.

The resume can be emailed to jjvela@laredoheatsc.com or faxed to (956) 723-7663. "We decided to change our approach to the tryouts this year and hopefully, with player resumes in hand prior to the sessions, we will be more efficient and truly prepared to look at all the potential athletes." Heat general manager, J.J. Vela said.

"At this point, we already have several resumes of players coming to the tryouts from as far away as Florida and other players who found out about Laredo last year during the playoffs. It's amazing to see how players find out about you when you do well and then want to be part of it. Of course, we still have returning players form last year and with the right mix of talent, we plan to make a longer run in the playoffs."

Once the resume is reviewed a handful of players will be invited to participate in their tryouts at the Laredo Job Corp on Friday, Feb. 24 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday the tryouts are going at the United Day School Field from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"The entire organization is looking forward to the 2006 season and we can't wait for the home opener versus Austin, Heat owner and team president, Shashi Vaswani said.

"After a successful 2005 campaign where we reached the conference finals in our first season in actual league play, I know the players and coaching staff are eager to show they can get passed that conference final game and hopefully into the PDL Championship Game."

All Heat home games will again be played at the UISD Student activity Center on Highway 359.
