Heat tie Lightning: Austin's auto goal helps Laredo gain a point
AUSTIN - The Laredo Heat didn't get out of their offensive funk, but still managed to tie the Austin Lightning 1-1 thanks to an auto goal.
The Heat (2-1-2, 8 points) didn't lose any ground in the Mid-South Division standings as the El Paso Patriots (3-2-2, 11 points) and the Dallas Tornados (2-1-1, 7 points) also ended in a tie at 2-2.
A consolation prize for the Patriots is that with their tie they qualified for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Up next for the Heat is a trip to Dallas on Sunday to take on the Tornados at Pennington Field.
Laredo started the game on a tear but failed to get a shot past the goalkeeper. In the 16th minute a shot by Danny Galvan deflected of an Austin (2-2-1, 7 points) defender giving Laredo the 1-0 lead.
The Lightning got on the scoreboard as the first half was winding down on a blast from Jarred Chandler.
Both teams traded goal scoring chances in the second half, but failed to come up with the game winner. Laredo has been held scoreless in their last two contests.
Heat to play Club America USA in friendly
On June 6, the Laredo Heat Soccer Club will host Club America USA in a Friendly Exhibition Game in Laredo, that is scheduled to kickoff at 8 PM at the Student Activity Complex located at the corner of Loop 20 and Highway 359.
On October of last year in Mexico City, DF, an agreement was signed by Mexican Soccer Team "Club America de Mexico" and Houston based InterPromotions, LLC, to establish the first official soccer academy in the United States for Club America. The official name of the academy in the United States is Club America USA.
InterPromotions, LLC and Club America USA President, Fernando Loza Ruiz, have established Club America in the northern suburb of Houston named The Woodlands.
"As an organization, we are happy to host the first official America Academy that has opened its doors in the United States. With Mexican soccer targeting our country using many different methods, I think it's evident that there are bigger and better alliances expected from the Mexican Federation in the near future," Heat Owner and CEO Shashi Vaswani said.
The match in Laredo will be the first game for Club America USA since its inception back in October and the organization is looking forward to seeing their club in action.
"We are excited to announce to the soccer community the arrival of Club America USA to the United States. The Aguilas are making their nest through the CERFORCA (Centro de Formacion del Club America) that we are proudly establishing in the City of Houston," Ruiz said
The game is being sponsored by both Wendy's of Laredo and UNIVISION and both companies have initiated a contest that includes a Family Pack of Ticket to the June 6th game that includes four tickets, a Heat t-shirt and a dinner for four at Wendy's the night of the game.
