Heat Quiet Lightning
The Laredo Heat completed the series sweep of the Austin Lightning with a 3-1 win Saturday night at the Student Activity Center in front of 640 fans.Hector "Gota" Vallejo opened up the scoring for Laredo with a goal in the fourth minute. Austin answered with a Jorge Vega score in the tenth minute to knot the game 1-1.
The clubs went into the break tied before Laredo was awarded a penalty in the 79 minute when Felix Garcia was tackled inside the box.
The penalty shot taken by Juan de Dios Ibarra was initially blocked by the Austin goalie, but Ibarra got to the rebound and scored the game winner.
Garcia capped the scoring with a goal in the 89 minute on an Ibarra assist.
The last remaining spot is between the El Paso Patriots (6-5-3, 20 points) and the Mississippi Brilla (6-5-3, 21 points).
The Patriots lost against Baton Rouge Friday 3-2 and were playing at New Orleans on Saturday.
Mississippi is idle until a Tuesday match against Baton Rouge and their season finale versus Laredo.
With the maser roster deadline approaching the Heat is expected to release their playoff roster by mid-week.
Laredo next plays at Baton Rouge and Mississippi next weekend.
