Heat Re-Signs Southern Conference Goalkeeper; Final Season Preparations Are In Place
Thursday, April 13, 2006, (Laredo, TX):
The Laredo Heat Soccer Club has announced the re-signing of the 2005 PDL's Southern Conference Goalkeeper and Team MVP Ryan Shaughnessy.
Shaughnessy re-joins the Heat after a very productive 2005 campaign in Laredo and a successful senior season at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. While at Hardin Simmons, Shaughnessy led the Cowboys into the NCAA Tournament and was named the American Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Before coming back to Laredo, Shaughnessy toiled in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon and Irapuato, Guanajuato from December to March getting training from professional goalkeeping coaches from Mexican professional teams.
When asked why he decided to come back to Laredo, Shaughnessy said, "I enjoyed our run into the playoffs last season and when I found out that Coach Collazo was taking over the team on a full time basis, I knew this season would be exciting." Shaughnessy concluded by saying, "With the core group of players coming back from last years team, plus the addition of several key players in key positions and the few young guns that Coach Collazo has signed, coming back to Laredo was really an easy decision to make."
Along with Shaughnessy, the Heat also re-signed TAMIU standout Ryan Harrison, former TAMIU star Chuy Sanchez and newcomer Jacob Almack, a teammate of Shaughnessy's at Hardin-Simmons University.
The Heat will be taking a few days off during the Easter holiday before getting back into full gear and preparing for the team's first game, an International Friendly Match versus the Reserve Team for the Monterrey Tigres on Thursday, April 20th. Additionally, the Heat will be playing a friendly scrimmage in San Antonio on Sunday, April 23rd versus the Incarnate Word University Soccer Team, an NCAA Division II powerhouse, before opening up their Premier Development League season versus the Austin Lightning on Saturday, April 29th in Laredo.
