Rained out

Game called at half time.

Laredo Morning Times

The Heat were ready to finally get the season underway, but both teams played relatively conservatively for the first ten minutes of the game.

Chuy Cortes whipped in a cross early on, and Mississippi won a corner, but neither chance was really close.

Laredo had some success going up the left side though Fransisco Lara and first half substitute Salvador Luna, but the Brilla back line stood tall any time they created a chance.

Lara squared a ball right in front of net 20 minutes in, but there wasn’t a Laredo player in front of net to put it away.

The best chance for the Heat in the first half came five minutes before half time after Lara won a corner. Cortes sent a ball in and defender Adam Butler got a head on it. After a save from the Mississippi keeper there was a flurry in front of the net with multiple chances.

Luna used a good bit of skill right in front of net on the 42nd minute, and tried to do a bicycle kick. A ball found Luis Garcia over the top a minute later, na he brought it down just fine but again the shot was too high.

This isn’t the first time weather has hampered Laredo this season. Their first regular season game against the Houston Dutch Lions, which was originally scheduled for May 16, was postponed because of flooded fields. And the second round U.S. Open Cup match against the Austin Aztec was delayed nearly an hour because of lightning.

The two teams play again Monday at 8 p.m. at the TAMIU Soccer Complex before Laredo goes on the road for seven straight games.
