Hernandez Named to PDL Team of the Week

Pair of goals fuels Heat in playoff push

LAREDO, Texas – Just a day before departing for their all-or-nothing regular season finale, the Premier Development League announced that the Laredo Heat earned its first Team of the Week honoree of the season. Yair Hernandez, a natural defensive player that’s featured throughout the Heat teamsheet, was named to the prestigious list for the season’s 11th week after netting a brace against the Mississippi Brilla on July 10.

Hernandez’s recognition is the first naming to the league’s best XI for Laredo this year, although the team has received several honorable mentions. Hernandez’s pair of goals against the Brilla bring his season total to three. He also scored three in 2013 with the Heat.

Starting goalkeeper, Jorge Ortega, was named an honorable mention for Week 11 after claiming the two wins over Mississippi on July 10 and 12.

Hernandez and the Heat’s strong form – having won two straight against the Brilla – puts them in a strong position to close their season at the Houston Dutch Lions with their backs against the wall. The match’s kickoff has been moved to 6 p.m.

The Heat face a must-win, needing maximum points to tie the Midland-Odessa Sockers with 24 points on the season.

If tied on points, the Heat hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Sockers after winning at home earlier this season and drawing at the Sockers.

The Heat (6-4-3, 21 points) control their playoff destiny, securing qualification if they win at Houston on July 19. If the Heat fall in their finale, then Laredo would be left out of the postseason for the first time in its decade-long existence.

The Heat will close their season at Houston on July 19 with a 6 p.m. kickoff. That match will be streamed live on YouTube atwww.YouTube.com/LaredoHeatSC.

The Southern Conference Championship will be played at the Austin Aztex’s House Park on July 25-26 with the Mid-South champion Aztex facing the Southeast Division’s second place finisher, while the Heat – if they qualify – would face the Southeast champion.
