After Rigorous Pre-Season, Heat Ready for 2012 PDL Season Opener

Laredo Heading to Houston to Play Expansion Side Texas Dutch Lions

Laredo, TX (Friday, May 11, 2012): In what can only be called a challenging pre-season, the Laredo Heat Soccer Club is ready to tackle the start of the 2012 Premier Development League (PDL) Regular Season as they open up away from home when they travel to the Houston area to take on the expansion side Texas Dutch Lions based in The Woodlands, TX.

Kick-off is set for 7:30 PM at Woodforest Stadium in Shenandoah, TX on Saturday, May 12, 2012.

The Texas Dutch Lions are the PDL affiliate of the Dayton (Ohio) Dutch Lions United Soccer Leagues (USL) Pro Division.

As the defending Mid-South Division and Southern Conference Champions, Laredo is very well aware of what lies ahead for them in the 2012 PDL Season in this challenging division and conference.

“As we do every season, we set our expectations very high by challenging our players and coaching staff to accomplish some very lofty goals, first to win our division, then make noise in the playoffs and finally, bringing another PDL title to Laredo”, said Heat General Manager J.J. Vela.

“But first things first, this weekend when we travel to Houston we need to be focused and make sure to come back home with three important road points. Coach Hernandez and his staff and players know that no team in the Mid-South is to be taken lightly and the last thing we need is to be surprised early in the season with a loss or a tie”.

Vela concluded, “The coaching staff is comfortable with the pre-season progress, with what was accomplished during the last two months and the way the new members of the team have adapted to our system of play. In addition, the chemistry and bond between new and former and young and veteran players has been a plus”.

 Upcoming Games

After returning to Laredo, the Heat has a very busy week ahead of them with two homes games scheduled for Tuesday, May 15th and Friday, May 18th.

On Tuesday, May 15th, Laredo will open the First Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tournament versus the ASC New Stars from Houston, TX. The ASC New Stars are a member of the United States Adult Soccer Association.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tournament is a United States Soccer Federation event similar to the FA Cup in England and the Copa del Rey in Spain where all federation member teams, from amateur to professional teams qualify to participate.

If the Heat are able to get a win versus the ASC New Stars they will then move on to the second round of the tournament where they will face the San Antonio Scorpions of the North American Soccer League (NASL) on Tuesday, May 22nd in San Antonio. The NASL is considered the second division of soccer in the United States just below Major League Soccer (MLS).

On Friday, May 18th, Laredo will open up with their first Premier Development League (PDL) regular season home game as they face long time rivals the El Paso Patriots.

El Paso and Laredo are coming off strong 2011 PDL campaigns as both represented the Mid-South Division at the PDL Southern Conference Playoff Tournament in Jackson, MS and this upcoming season should be no different for the Rio Grande rivals.

Both games will be played at the Texas A&M International University Soccer Complex, home to the Laredo Heat Soccer Club for the past three seasons. Kick-off is set for 8:00 PM for both matches.
