Heat advances to Southern Conference Final

Friday July 29, 2011 - Heat advances to Southern Conference Final

Will Face Mississippi Brilla in Conference Final

Jackson, MS (Friday, July 29, 2011): In what can only be described as one of the Heat’s most disorganized games of the 2011 PDL Season, Laredo was able to hold off the Central Florida Kraze 1 – 0 in the opening game of the Southern Conference Championship in Jackson, MS to advance into the conference title game on Saturday, July 30th versus the host team, the Mississippi Brilla. This was Laredo’s first win in the playoffs since making it to the PDL Championship Game in 2008. First round losses in 2009 (Bradenton Academics) and 2010 (Baton Rouge Capitals) had left the Heat without playoff wins for two years.

A penalty kick in the 55th minute of the game that was converted by Juan de Dios Ibarra, after a knockdown by Kraze defender Daniel Sackman on Reynol Fuentes inside the 18 yard box, was the only score of the game.

It took both teams some time to get into the groove of the game as both sides struggled to convert any type of offense. The Kraze took more shots than Heat but nothing was really coming close to make Heat goalkeeper Emmanuel Frias make any type of save.

“This was a complicated game that was played hard by both sides and fortunately for us, the costly mistake that both of us wanted to avoid was made by the opposition”, mentioned Heat Head Coach Israel Collazo.

“I will be first one to say that this was an ugly win for us but we have been on the other side of an outcome in which we have outplayed the opponent but have lost the match so I’ll take the win, it moves into the next round”.

Collazo concluded, “Central Florida fought hard and played very well and personally, I am glad to get this type of game out of the way early in the playoffs. I promise that my team will not play like this for the remainder of the post-season”.

In the late game, the Mississippi Brilla were too much for the Chivas El Paso Patriots as two scores in the first half were enough to seal a victory for the home team. A third goal in the second half gave the Brilla a 3 – 0 win over the Sun City team.

The PDL’s Southern Conference Championship Game will be played on Saturday evening at Harper Davis Field between the two division champions. Kick-off is set for 7:30 P.M.
