The Premier Development League’s Mid-South Division title came down to the regular season finale for the Laredo Heat on Sunday night.

Ahead of Chivas El Paso by two points for first place entering the game, Laredo needed anything but a defeat to hold on for the championship, and it accomplished just that.

By way of a 0-0 decision in El Paso, the Heat earned their fifth Mid-South title in eight years and their third in a row.

Both the Heat and the Patriots are headed to the 64-team PDL’s postseason.

They will begin their quest for a national championship next weekend in Mississippi.

Laredo finished the regular season with an 11-3-3 record for 35 points.

El Paso finished 10-3-3 for 33 points, and the two rivals finished their season series 1-1-1.

Goalkeeper Emmanuel Frias held off the Patriots time and time again and was crucial in victory.

Both teams had opportunities to score, particularly the Heat, who saw attempts by Juan de Dios Ibarra and Esteban Bayona fall short in compensation time in the first half.

The Heat next host the Nuevo Laredo Bravos on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the TAMIU Soccer Complex before starting their quest for a second national title
