With one more win, the Laredo Heat can successfully defend their Mid-South Division title of Premier Development League soccer.

That opportunity comes tomorrow, when the Heat travel to El Paso to face the Patriots, who are right on Laredo’s heels for the Mid-South lead.

Laredo is currently two points ahead of El Paso in the standings following Thursday’s 2-1 victory against West Texas before a crowd of 1,491.

The Heat are 11-3-1 overall for 34 points. El Paso is 10-3-2 for 32. A win for Laredo in Saturday’s regular season finale will give the Heat their fifth Mid-South title in eight years and third straight.

Laredo has already clinched a playoff spot.

With Thursday’s contest essentially meaningless in regard to the standings, the Heat still took care of business, taking a 2-1 halftime lead thanks to goals by Juan de Dios Ibarra and Esteban Bayona.

Ibarra scored on a free kick from 28 yards out in the fifth minute. After West Texas got on the board, Bayona followed in the 40th minute, outlasting his defender one-on-one.

It was Bayona’s 13th strike of the season. He ranks fourth in the 64-team PDL in that category.
