Match Preview: Laredo Set to Face West Texas United at TAMIU

Second Half of 2011 Regular Season Begins Thursday

Laredo, Texas (Wednesday, June 15, 2011): As the Laredo Heat Soccer Club (6 – 2 – 0, 18 points) prepares for the second half of the 2011 Premier Development League (PDL) regular season, there is only one goal in mind, that of winning the PDL’s Mid-South Division Title and making the playoffs.

And it all gets started on Thursday, June 16th at 8:00 P.M. at the Texas A&M International University Soccer Complex when the visiting West Texas United Sockers (3 – 4 – 0, 9 points) come into town.

The Midland based soccer team has only played seven games in 2011 and by no means are they out of the hunt for a playoff spot midway through the season. The Sockers opened the season with a resounding 4 – 1 victory over the current co-leaders in the Mid-South Division, the Chivas El Paso Patriots (tied for first place in the Mid-South Division with the Laredo Heat). If they are able to pull out victories in Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley this weekend, they are very aware that they will be in the thick of the divisional race.

“Since their founding three years ago, West Texas has always been a formidable opponent to every team in the division”, mentioned Heat Head Coach Israel Collazo.

“Though we beat them early in the season by a score of 2 – 1, they scored on us early in the third minute of the game and we had to come back to beat them. It took a goal in the 87th minute of the game to get our victory and three points”.

Collazo concluded, “We took a tough loss last week here at home versus Baton Rouge and now it is time to get back on track to finish the season strong. I told the team that starting this week versus West Texas, nothing was going to come easy and with eight games left to finish the regular season (three at home and five away), we knew what we needed to do and most importantly to ready for the challenges that will be coming from our opponents”.
