Capitals' punishment

Laredo Morning Times
On Sunday night in Baton Rouge, the Laredo Heat earned a semblance of redemption, and they did so thanks to the clutch talent of Felix Garcia.

Garcia’s dagger in the 83rd minute secured a 1-0 victory for Laredo over the Baton Rouge Capitals, who ended the Heat’s season in the postseason last year.

That contest last year was decided by penalty kicks.

That would not be necessary Sunday, as Garcia – the former LBJ High great – took matters into his own hands before it ever got to that point.

The victory pushed the Heat’s winning streak to three as they improved to 5-1-0 (15 points) on the season, tied with Chivas El Paso for first place in the Premier Development League’s Mid-South Division.

The Patriots are responsible for Laredo’s lone setback so far this year, a 1-0 decision on May 14.

The Capitals fell to 1-3-0.

Garcia’s goal, his second in as many games, came unassisted and broke a tied game, though the Heat had plenty of scoring chances in the first half with eight shots to Baton Rouge’s one.

Each team earned a yellow card.

Paired with Saturday’s 3-1 win over New Orleans, the Heat came away with a pivotal six points on this weekend’s road trip to Louisiana.

The Heat return to action Friday versus those daunting Patriots for a home tilt at the Texas A&M International Soccer Complex.

The game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m.
