Before engaging in two crucial Open Cup qualifying matches next weekend in Louisana, the Laredo Heat first had to take care of some business in the Valley on Saturday night.

Coming off a tough defeat after two consecutive wins to start the season, Esteban Bayona made sure the Heat would not lose two straight, scoring twice to nip expansion Rio Grande Valley 2-1 in Edinburg.

The Heat improved to 3-1-0, nine points, on the season.

Bayona struck quickly in the sixth minute on a header assisted by Damian Lopez.

After the Grandes (0-4-0) answered in the 61st minute on a goal by Alfonzo Cavazos, Bayona struck again, this time on an assist from Felix Garcia in the 69th minute.

The Heat was issued four yellow cards in the game.

Now to qualify for the Cup, the Heat has to win the qualifying matches against New Orleans and Baton Rouge, both of which fall on the upcoming road trip next weekend.

On top of winning those games, the Heat needs help from Chivas El Paso opponents, since the Patriots won both their qualifying games last weekend.

The Cup is the oldest cup competition in the country, dating back to 1914, and it shares its tradition and similarity with the much more famous FA Cup in England and Copa del Rey in Spain.

Amateur athletes have the opportunity to kickoff against the best teams nationally, posing as a great scouting and learning experience for both the perennial soccer powers and the up-and-coming amateur players.

“We’ve only qualified once for the Cup,” Heat owner Shashi Vaswani said earlier this week.

“It seems to elude us more often than not, even though we’ve had good talented teams.

“It offers the opportunity to gain exposure against much more proven teams.”
