Heat Open 2011 PDL Season with a Victory Over Expansion RGV FC

Four Different Players Get on the Scoresheet

LAREDO, Texas (Saturday, May 7, 2011): The Laredo Heat (1 – 0 – 0, 3 points) wasted no time in washing the taste of last year’s first round playoff exit from its mouth when it hosted the Rio Grande Valley Grandes FC Friday night in its Premier Development League (PDL) season opener at the Texas A&M International Soccer Complex.

The Heat opened the contest with a breakaway goal from Damian Lopez in the third minute of the night and ran away with the contest from there, winning by a score of 5-1 when all was said and done.

The Grandes (0 – 1 – 0, 0 points) were held off the board until the game’s 66th minute when Alfonso Cavazos scored for the visiting team on a beautifully placed free kick into the box.

Laredo swiftly snuffed out any hopes at a rally, however, by retaliating mere minutes later when Esteban Bayona delivered a rocket of a score from the left edge of the Grandes goalie box.

The score was Bayona’s second of the night.

Reynol Fuentes and Edwardo Gonzalez also contributed goals for Laredo.

Last night’s win bodes well for the Heat, as it will face the Grandes three more times over the course of the summer’s 16 PDL game season.

The Heat return to the pitch Friday night May 13th when the West Texas United (Midland) Sockers (1 – 1 – 0, 3 points) come to town for the start of the only back to back weekend of the year. On Saturday evening, the Chivas El Paso Patriots (1 – 1 – 0, 3 points) will complete the weekend set of games. Both games will be Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Qualifying Games for the Laredo Heat and visiting teams.

The Heat will continue with its partnership with Chick-Fil-A Mall del Norte of giving away a free regular Chick-FIl-A chicken sandwich to all fans that purchase a ticket to their home games when the Heat scores three or more goals.
