Heat Add Local Flavor to Roster - Monday, April 26, 2010

With the 2010 Premier Development League regular season fast approaching, the Laredo Heat continue to add players to their Master Roster and this week, the Gateway City soccer team announced the addition of four local players that they hope will make contributions both on and off the pitch.

The first local player announced was veteran defender Raul Quiñones. Quiñones will be making his fifth consecutive Heat roster. The former Nixon High School and TAMIU standout has been a fixture on the backline and his experience is something that Heat Head Coach Israel Collazo will be counting on this season. The tall and lanky Quiñones will occupy one of the team’s 23 and Over allocations this season.

Last year, Eduardo “Wayo” Gonzalez and Rodrigo “Rorro” Avila were fixtures with the Heat’s Youth Soccer Club and Academy and immediately as their youth season was over in the Spring of 2009, both youngsters were called up to the PDL club to showcase their talent at a higher level.

Wayo and Rorro, as they are known locally and with the club, gained enough experience that Coach Collazo is not only expecting them to show up to practice but he will be expecting them to make significant contributions to the team in 2010.

“I am expecting Wayo and Rorro to fight for playing time against our veteran players and to use their youth to their advantage. I have seen both of them for some time now and know what they are capable of accomplishing. Now, it is in their hands to make it happen”, said Collazo.

Gonzalez, a product of Alexander High School, is a forward and is currently enrolled at Texas A&M International University and should dress up come the Fall as he redshirted his freshman year.

Avila on the other hand just finished his prep career and is about to graduate next month from Alexander High School and has committed to play collegiately at TAMIU with Coach Claudio Arias. Avila will provide his services to the Heat as a goalkeeper.

Lastly, another Heat Youth Soccer Club and Academy alumnus, Juan Lara (Alexander High School), will be joining the Heat for a second straight year. Lara, currently enrolled at the Laredo Community College is a defensive midfielder who has matured on the pitch over the past year.

Right now, with the season opener getting closer to starting, the Heat is still in the process of adding several more local players to their 26 man roster and will have new additions once players playing out of state return to Laredo for the summer.

Heat Owner Shashi Vaswani concluded, “The idea has always been to promote our youth from Laredo and give them the opportunity to succeed at a higher level of play and all of the above mentioned players, excluding Quiñones, are products of our youth club and academy and they will learn a great deal in a professional environment and this is just the beginning of exciting plans for our youth players which will bring more Laredo youngsters into the fold the coming seasons”.

The Laredo Heat opens up their 2010 PDL Regular Season on Friday, April 30, 2010 versus the Rio Grande Valley Bravos at the Texas A&M International University Soccer Complex. Kick-off is set for 8:00 PM.
