Late Goal Gives Aztex 2 – 1 Win Over Heat - March 26, 2010

The USSF Division II Professional League Austin Aztex needed all 90 minutes of their game versus the USL PDL’s Laredo Heat Soccer Club to come out victorious 2 – 1.

In a very well played game by both sides, a goal in compensation time by the Aztex’s Jamie Watson was needed for the win by the visiting Capital City club.

The Laredo Heat took a 1 – 0 lead into the half when Midfielder Juan de Dios Ibarra converted a penalty kick on Aztex keeper Miguel Gallardo in the 41st minute after Heat Forward Felix Garcia was brought down inside the 18 yard box.

The Heat played tough for the majority of the second half but gave up a game tying goal in the 83th minute when Aztex Forward Danny Santius shot a scorcher by Heat keeper Stephen Williams. A few minutes earlier, Williams protected the Heat’s 1 – 0 lead when he beautifully blocked Jamie Watson’s PK attempt.

“Overall, we are satisfied with the game because we got to see several players with very little soccer experience versus a quality team”, said Heat General Manager J.J. Vela.

“Coach Collazo and his staff liked what they got from the core group of players already on the roster and most importantly, they were able to assess players that are looking at making the team the upcoming season”.

Vela concluded, “Overall, this was a good outing for us and it gave us exactly what we were looking for. With our college players coming into the fold soon along with other players that we are expecting to sign in the next few weeks, we should be ready for the regular season when it gets started on Friday, April 30th at home versus the Rio Grande Valley Bravos”.
