Heat’s Regular Season Opener Postponed

April 30, 2009

Thursday, April 30, 2009 (Laredo, TX):

The United Soccer Leagues (USL) announced today that the Heat’s Regular Season Opener in Hidalgo, Texas versus the expansion Rio Grande Valley Bravos has been postponed. The game was scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2009.

A statement regarding the situation was issued by USL’s Executive Vice-President and COO Tim Holt.

McALLEN, TX – The Rio Grande Valley Bravos, in consultation with United Soccer Leagues, announced that the season opening match for Saturday, May 2 has been indefinitely postponed as a precautionary measure in light of the current concerns regarding the Swine Influenza outbreak.

The USL Premier Development League match scheduled for Saturday that was postponed featured the Laredo Heat visiting the Rio Grande Valley Bravos at Valley View High School in Hidalgo, TX. No date have been set for the postponed fixture at this time.

“At this stage, there are only a very limited number of confirmed cases of swine flu outside of Mexico. However, due to the risks that large gatherings of people represent for the possible spread of this virus, we are closely monitoring the development of this situation,” said USL Executive Vice President and COO Tim Holt. “This process includes reviewing the daily advisories issued by various medical organizations, as well as communicating with other sports leagues.”

“At this time, United Soccer Leagues, in cooperation with the clubs involved, has decided that due to the special circumstances of the match being held in a city along the Mexican border, it was prudent to postpone the match for this weekend and continue monitoring the situation in an ongoing basis in Texas and any other communities that may experience circumstances of concern. Should the severity of this outbreak dramatically increase nationally or in any particular region, we will react accordingly in conjunction with those best suited to measure the safety risks involved.”

USL will continue to communicate with all franchises and teams as the outbreak continues to be monitored and treated.
